Fact behind Origin of famous Brand/Company Names

When it comes to shopping or buying something, we start thinking about all different brand names. This company names are so famous that itself describe about their product and services they offer or they are specialized in. But behind this famous company name, do you know how they came up with their company name. You will sure get amazed by how this famous names got originated due to strange circumstances, event and occasion.

 

1.) Mercedes:

The name Mercedes came from Emil Jellinek daughters name Mercedes. Emill Jellinek was working with Gottlieb Damiler in racing car production. Check here for more info.

 

2.) Google:

Google name came from typo error. Due to a typo error, the original name “Googol” was registered wrongly by a Stanford Student as “Google”. Googol mean the number one followed by one hundred zeros. check here for more on Google name origin.

 

3.) Apple:

Steve Jobs came up with a name “Apple Computers”. It was the favorite fruit of founder Steve Jobs. Later the company dropped Computer part and changed the name to Apple, since they successfully diversified into iPod and iPhones.

 

4.)  Adobe:

The name Adobe came from Adobe Creek in Los Altos, California, which ran behind the house of one of the company's founders.

 

5.) Compaq:

The name "COMPAQ" is an acronym for “Compatibility and Quality”, Since Compaq was to produce some of the first IBM PC Compatible computers.

 

6.) Hewlett Packard (HP):

HP name was decided using a coin. Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company they founded would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.

 

7.) Intel:

Moore and Noyce initially wanted to name the company "Moore Noyce”. The name, however, was a homophone for "more noise" an ill-suited name for an electronics company, since noise in electronics is usually very undesirable and typically associated with bad interference. They used the name NM Electronics for almost a year. Later they decide to call their company as Integrated Electronics in short “INTEL”. Since "Intel" was already trademarked by a hotel chain, they had to buy the rights for the name.

 

8.) Microsoft:

The name Microsoft came from two word that is Microcomputer and Software coming up with Microsoft.

 

9.) Hotmail:

Hotmail service was founded by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith, and was one of the first webmail services on the Internet. The name Hotmail was chosen after many possibilities ending name with “–mail”, Finally they settled down with HoTMaiL as it has HTML in the word. Html is a programming language for web designing.

 

10.) SUN:

On February 24, 1982 Vinod Khosla, Andy Bechtolsheim, and Scott McNealy, all Stanford graduate students, founded Sun Microsystems. Sun name derived from the initials of the Stanford University Network.

 

11.) Yahoo:

The word was invented by Jonathan Swift and used in his book 'Gulliver's Travels'. It represents a person who is repulsive in
appearance and action and is barely human. Yahoo! Founders Jerry Yang and David Filo selected the name because they considered themselves yahoos.

 

12.) Sony:

The founders Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka of Sony originated name from Latin word “Sonus” which mean Sound and “sonny” a slang word used in American to call a young boy.
