We all may know some knowledge of our country you live in, But hardly few people know anything about the earth. One day I asked my friend asking about his country, he replied with good information about his country but when I asked him about the earth, he replied me in short and simple, “The Earth is Round”. The answer was silly and so as our knowledge on earth. Don’t think this as your science class, As we are not going to look on the detail of earth, However, we will see some general awesome facts that you may or may not know.
Awesome Facts about Earth
- 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water
When Astronaut went to space for the first time they found the earth with their naked eye to be blue, and so its called blue planet. 70% of earth is covered with oceans and remaining 30% exist in form of atmosphere, lakes, streams, or groundwater.
- A day on earth isn’t 24 hours
A day on earth is actually 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds. This is the time taken by earth to completely rotate around its axis. That means, a day is 4 minute shorter. A year on Earth isn’t 365 days, The Earth orbits the Sun every 365.2564 days. It’s this extra .2564 days that creates the need for leap years. That is why we have an extra day on February for the year which is divisible by four e.g: 2000,2004,2008,2012.
- Earth Protected by Magnetic Field
The earth is said to be one giant magnet having poles of north and south which effectively extends several tens of thousands of kilometers into space and is called magnetosphere. The magnetosphere shields the surface of the Earth from the charged particles of the solar wind. If there were no magnetosphere, the solar particle from the sun would directly hit the earth and does exposure to radiation. Therefore magnetosphere is protecting our earth.
The Earth’s shape kind of like a sphere. But its consider its not completely round.
The air we breath is mixture of different gasses. The atmosphere of earth composed of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% various other gases including: xenon, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, argon, neon, helium, and krypton. There are some other gasses are also present in the atmosphere too.
- Earth has 1 moon and 2 co-orbital satellites
People say they see two moon sometime. That because we have 1 moon and 2 asteroids which are locked into a co-orbital orbits with Earth. They're called 3753 Cruithne and 2002 AA29.
- 10% of earth surface is covered by ice
Antarctica has as much ice as the Atlantic Ocean has water. The Arctic produces 10,000 to 50,000 icebergs annually. Icebergs normally have a four-year life-span. It is said that Antarctica is world's longest glacier.
- Earth has Plate tectonics
Tectonics plays a very vital role in formation of earth. Earth is the only planet in the solar system which has plate tectonics. This plates are in the form of crust of the earth and the most important use of this plates are recycling of carbon. It absorb the carbon from the atmosphere.
The earth comprise of several layer, starting from the surface of the earth. There are four layer of earth namely, the crust, the mantle, the outer core and the inner core.
- General facts about Earth
Earth is the third planet from the Sun. It is sometimes referred to as the World, the Blue Planet. This is also the fifth largest planet in the entire solar system. Earth is the only planet known to have life.
