Khesari Dal (Lathyrus sativus L.)
Lathyrus sativus L. generally known as Khesari Dal is a popular pulse food mainly found in many parts of India. Although it is very tasty and a protein rich(around 30g/100g edible seed). But contains a harmful substance like Neurotoxin called as a Lathrogen and contains a high amount of free lhomoargining which acts a precursor of lysine in higher animals, overconsumption can cause an upper neuron disease known as neurolathyrism- an irreversible paralysis of lower limbs. The level of this compound in dry seeds differs depending on genetic factor and environmental conditions.
